Curriculum - Overview Overview At Queen’s Dyke School we aim to create a rich, stimulating and attractive working environment for children. Through our planning of learning activities, use of displays, visits out of school and visitors into school, we seek to ensure that children are interested to learn, and that their learning is appropriate to their particular needs. In the Foundation Stage there are 6 Areas of Learning:- Personal, social and emotional development Communication, language and literacy Mathematical Development Knowledge and understanding of the world Physical development Creative development Within all areas of development, children will learn through the use of both indoor and outdoor facilities. The children in Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 follow a broad and balanced curriculum based on the National Curriculum. This is carefully planned and assessed to ensure progression in learning. Whilst we focus on the core subjects of English, Mathematics, Science and Information and Communication Technology (ICT), we value the contribution that all subject areas make to the development of the whole child. Children's learning opportunities include the foundation subjects, which are design technology, PSHCE (Personal, Social, Health and Citizenship education) primary languages, information technology, history, geography, art and design, physical education and music. Religious education is also studied. Detailed policies on each of the curriculum areas are available at school.
It is important to remember that although the various subject areas are a major part of the school curriculum, they are not in themselves the whole of the curriculum. The curriculum of the school is also very much concerned with children's morals and values, behavior and attitudes, and other aspects of personal and social education. We encourage children to have a caring attitude to their environment through work within the curriculum and on-going discussion of current issues, both locally and world-wide. Respect for the environment is linked to the caring ethos within the school. The children are encouraged to take a pride in their work and made to feel proud of their achievements. All staff aim to challenge children appropriately according to their ability. We try to ensure that within the range of learning situations children are given the opportunity to think and reason for themselves, equipping them with skills for the present and future.
RELIGIOUS EDUCATION AND COLLECTIVE WORSHIP We follow the Oxfordshire religious education policy, which forms part of our curriculum. Collective Worship takes place on a daily basis throughout the whole school. This does reflect a multi-cultural society but they are in the main Christian based. Parents can withdraw their children from Collective Worship and religious education if they so wish, and alternative arrangements would be made for these children following discussion with the Headteacher. The following is a list of curriculum policies available. Please contact the school office if you would like to read any of them.
