Curriculum - SEN/ G & T SPECIAL EDUCATIONAL NEEDS (SEN) PROVISION In the case of a child with special medical, social, emotional or educational needs, the Local Authority provides various agencies we can call on to give us specific advice and support. These include Educational Psychologist, Sensory Support Services, School Doctor or Nurse, and the Advisory Teacher for Inclusion (SEN). All of these services work closely in partnership with parents and school; none of them is consulted without parents' knowledge and agreement.
Teachers are experienced at teaching children within a wide range of stages of development and are sensitive to their individual needs. Often there is no need for any follow up other than that provided in a class situation. At other times extra support may be necessary either in a group or individually, and may be for short or long term. This support is provided by our Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator and SEN Teaching Assistants under her supervision. We follow the National SEN Code of Practice and, where appropriate, the LA provides children with Statements of Educational Need. A new SEN policy was written and adopted in 2009, which complies with the recommendations of the Special Educational Needs and Disability Act 2001 and revised Special Educational Needs Code of Practice 2002. Children’s progress is monitored and reviewed by the class teacher and the SENCO. Individual Educational Plans are written for children where necessary and regular review meetings are held with parents. If you would like your child to come to this school and feel that (s)he may need special educational provision, it is important that you discuss your child’s needs with the Headteacher before they start school. ARRANGEMENTS FOR ADMISSION OF PUPILS WITH DISABILITIESSchool Access Plans The SEN and Disability Act 2001 amended Part 4 of the Disability Discrimination Act 1995 by introducing new duties on LAs and school in relation to disabled pupils and prospective pupils. All schools were required to produce an Access Plan detailing the school’s intentions to enable access for disabled pupils in terms of the building, the curriculum and information. A copy of the Access Plan is available from the school. All children living in the school's catchment area are entitled to a place at the school, providing that the school can cater appropriately for their needs. Consistent with our equal opportunity policy, we ensure that no child will be treated less favourably than another. Wheelchairs can access six out of fourteen classrooms. A wheelchair lift has been installed for the new classrooms, improving access to these areas. |
