Welcome to the start of our new Autumn Term Welcome to Queen's Dyke Primary School. We have an attractive school of unusual design on the west side of Witney. The school was built in 1970 and takes children from three housing estates, Burwell Farm, Burwell Meadow and Thorney Leys, as well as the village of Curbridge. The school is named after Queen Emma who was the wife of Ethelred the Unready and later of King Canute. She was mother to one stepson and two natural sons who became Kings of England, the most famous being Edward the Confessor, the builder of Westminster Abbey. King Edward the Confessor signed a Charter in 1044 giving areas of land in and around Witney to the Bishop of Winchester. Queen Emma, the Queen Mother also signed the Charter. The Bishop built a Palace in Witney. The Dyke, which was built to drain the land, was associated with Queen Emma. We look forward to meeting you as a first step in forming a happy and successful partnership, since we share the responsibility for your child's education in their years at school. We hope you find the information you want whilst looking through the site but please do contact us if you have any further questions, and you are very welcome to come and have a look around.
